The Swan is a station that was built to study the electromagnetic uniqueness on the Island. It was built by the DHARMA Initiative. Why's it called the Swan? Not a clue.

The Swan was something that Dr. Pierre Chang invented to give Stuart Radzinsky something to do. That way, when Dr. Chang invited all the scientists over to a poker game, and Radzinsky would ask "Can I come?", Dr. Chang could always rebut, with the use of qutation fingers: "Don't you have to build that 'special project' to 'save the world' - like we talked about?"

Radzinsky - as a result - become obsessed with building the Swan. In actuality, the Swan was originally just for storage. That was until Jack showed up with an H-bomb. Way to go, Jack.

The Swan's Function Post-Incident[]

So, after Jack blew up the electromagnetic pocket, the Swan was changed. Through the use of really sophiscated computers - it studies a field which exerts a fundamental force of particles with the property of electric charge which is reciprocally affected by the presence of the motion of such particles in such a which assumes you know a few basic ideas about Einstein's theory of relativity and have found the mathematically idealized model of the physics of electromagnetism and the field therein. Naively, we could try to work by analogy with the electric field, and define the magnetic field as the magnetic force per unit charge. However, if we think of the lone charge in our example as the test charge, we'll find that this approach fails, because the force depends not just on the test particle's charge, but on its velocity, v, as well. Therefore, we define the magnetic field vector, B, as the vector that determines the force on a charged particle according to the following rule: F=qv×B[definition of the magnetic field] From this definition, we see that the magnetic field's units are N⋅s/C⋅m, which are usually abbreviated as teslas, 1 T=1 N⋅s/C⋅m. The definition implies a right-hand-rule relationship among the vectors, figure d, if the charge q is positive, and the opposite handedness if it is negative. And, unless this paragrah made you end up like this guy, that is what the Swan's bathroom is like.
